Maps, Statistics and Online Databases

This section represents the entry point to maps, statistics and online databases currently accessable from the UN Atlas of the Ocean and to collections of maps related to oceans. The user can use the left-side frame to look into specific domain of interest. Another entry point to maps is through the GEOGRAPHY worldview where maps have been catalogued according to their geographic coverage.

Collection of maps from the 3 volumes Atlas of the Oceans, published by the Russian Head Department of Navigation and Oceanography (HDNO), and covering various aspects of the oceans are now available. By clicking the link below, users can look at a preview of what is available. Registered users can access the full size images of each map from the sub-topic Ocean Maps from Russian Atlas available on the left side frame.   See More...

TitleGlobal Temperature and Salinity Profile Program (GTSPP)   ( PROJECT )
Project SummaryThe Global Temperature and Salinity Profile Program (GTSPP) is a cooperative international project to develop and maintain a global ocean Temperature-Salinity resource with data that are both up-to-date and of the highest quality. Both real-time data transmitted over the Global Telecommunications System (GTS), and delayed-mode data received through the IODE's National Oceanographic Data Centres are acquired and incorporated into a continuously managed database. Countries contributing to the project are Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Russia, and the United States. Canada's Marine Environmental Data Service (MEDS) leads the project, and has the operational responsibility to gather and process the real-time data. MEDS accumulates real-time data from several sources via the GTS, check the data for several types of errors, and remove duplicate copies of the same observation before passing the data on to the US NODC. The quality control procedures used in GTSPP were developed by MEDS, who also coordinated the publication of those procedures through the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC). The GTSPP Real-time Quality Control Manual (IOC Manuals and Guides #22) has been produced within the context of GTSPP and describes the means by which data quality is assessed and the actions taken as a result of the procedures.
