Avoidance

DEFINITION
  • In stock assessment, the probability of a fish (usually large) avoiding capture, e.g. by swimming away or along a gillnet, or out of the pathway of a trawl. Often expressed as a function of size (or age) (avoidance curve).
  • In general, movement of a fish (or a fish school) away from an approaching fishing vessel or gear.
